WITH credit-crunch fever threatening to take hold, the Barnsley Chronicle has brewed up the perfect tonic, with its first ever 'Community Cash Giveaway' in association with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF).

Through the Grassroots Grants programme, SYCF has more than £100,000 available for volunteer led community groups and projects in Barnsley this year, and £25,000 of that has been made available exclusively to Chronicle readers.

Grassroots Grants aims to provide much needed assistance to Barnsley's unsung heroes, with grants of between £250 and £700 available to those who work to help local communities.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said:  "We are absolutely delighted to have teamed up with the Barnsley Chronicle for this fantastic cash giveaway.

Small voluntary and community groups can apply to receive a cash boost, for example to pay for tools to clean up a local park, for a sports team to purchase new equipment, or to fund training costs for group members.

"There are so many groups in Barnsley that perform miracles every day on shoestring budgets.  We hope that this cash will come as great help to grassroots projects that are so vital to the local community."
