SHOCKING figures show that an estimated 70,000 people over the age of 65 are living in fuel poverty in South Yorkshire.
These harsh statistics illustrate the struggle being faced by older people throughout our region.
Further figures from the Yorkshire Public Health Observatory show that around 515 more people aged over 65 died in South Yorkshire last winter than in any other season.
The findings also show that around 70% of these excess winter deaths (EWD) were a result of circulatory or respiratory diseases, which are exacerbated by cold weather conditions.
What is Surviving Winter?
Faced with this bleak scenario, the South Yorkshire Community Foundation has launched the Surviving Winter Appeal, to encourage people to make donations to help older and vulnerable people affected by fuel poverty this winter.
The campaign was originally inspired by individuals who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment from the government to support older and vulnerable people who are less fortunate than themselves. Now everyone is being encouraged to Donate.
What is the Winter Fuel Payment?
The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax free payment to help older people keep warm during winter. It is provided by the government to those who are eligible.
Find out how much it is and who receives it at Direct.gov.uk.
