Volunteer Spotlight: Chris Booth Mayblin

Chris Booth-Mayblin became the new Chair of South Yorkshire Community Foundation last month, but why did she take up the new post? How is it going so far? As part of Volunteer Week 2021, she explains all and shares more about her journey

Why did you decide to become involved with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF) as Chair?

“South Yorkshire Community Foundation has a fantastic reputation for helping to build thriving, healthier and resilient communities, and I wanted to play an active part in addressing inequality and disadvantage through working with SYCF.  The foundation is unique in that it connects donors with a passion to support people facing hardship with community groups who are making a real difference on the ground. It is key to driving positive change across South Yorkshire”

How do you feel the experience in your professional and voluntary roles will help you in your role as Chair?

“My work in education and regeneration both in South Yorkshire and Europe has provided me with insights into the issues communities face and how funding can provide opportunities to change life chances. As a Trustee and Chair at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway for over 14 years, I have also seen at first-hand the positive role voluntary organisations can play in enabling people with learning disabilities and their families, to lead the very best lives they can. There are community groups all over South Yorkshire, who are similarly making a real difference to people’s lives”

How have you felt supported by the staff team at the Foundation?

“One of my first tasks was to meet the staff team and they have been so supportive and welcoming, inviting me to team meetings, as well as taking part in grant panel meetings. It feels a happy and creative place to work, where everyone is passionate about what they do”

What have you enjoyed doing in your role so far?

“I’ve enjoyed meeting diverse groups of people and  learning about the work of the organisation, but above all I’m looking forward to getting out and visiting groups across South Yorkshire”

What message would you give to our volunteers on Volunteers Week?

“On Volunteers Week, I would like to thank our volunteers for their contribution to South Yorkshire Community Foundation, especially over the last year, during an uncertain time for us all”
